Why does the durian fruit smell so terrible?

According to the research, the researchers are trying to figure out why durians smell the way they do. It turns out that methionine, a rare amino acid, is to blame. The smell was previously thought to be caused by a chemical component called ethanethiol, but it wasn't clear how the fruit produced it. According to a new study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the ethionine concentration of a durian increases as it ripens, releasing the smell.

Researchers say the amount of methionine in durian is important to know, not only because it helps us understand why they’re so smelly but also because consuming this amino acid may bring health hazards.
