Ways to Open a Durian

1. Choosing a Durian
It was important to understand how to choose the best durian. It may be excessively bitter and pungent if it is overripe. The durian flesh will be hard and tasteless if it is not ripe enough. The following tips for choosing the perfect fruit still apply. This is a subtle art that combines the senses of smell, hearing, and touch.

2. Listen to the durian
The first thing we need to do is take the durian and hold it in both hands. Just use the tea towels to protect your hands if the thorns are hurting. After that, place the durian near to your ear and shake thoroughly it. If there is no sound, the fruits are becoming too ripe. The fruits are not ripe enough if you make a hard knocking sound. Dull, subtle knocks are what you want.

3. Smell the Durian
After you've found the right knocking sound, you'll want to narrow down your options even further by smelling them. Place the durian an inch away from your nose. Take a whiff, and you'll notice that the durian is mildly fragrant. If the durian smells raw, like unripe fruit, it's definitely overripe, and the flesh will be soft and creamy. It should have a balanced fragrance that is neither too raw nor too pungent.


4. Look for the bottom to Open the Durian
When you've found the perfect durian, it's time to open it up. You can see faint brownish outlines of a 5-pointed star at the base of the fruits if you look closely. The sutures, or lines, that separate the durian's different segments. Splitting open a durian will be a breeze if you follow these lines.


5. Opening with a Knife
To open the durian, get a knife with a strong and sharp tip. Hold the durian in one hand with a piece of cloth. Cut directly through the centre of the "star" with the knife with one hand. Twist the knife left and right a few times once it has penetrated the durian by around 2 inches. The sutures or lines between the various parts should open up. Along these lines, the durian will be opened.

6. Use Hand to Break the Durian
When the durian opens a few more inches, separate the durian segments with your hands. It's a great idea to use a cloth to protect your hands from the thorns. It's now time to consume your durian. Start eating the durian flesh and throw out the seeds.
